TEACHING
ACADEMIC + PRofessional
IS THIS TEACHING? I was on a plane, planning a strategy for my next rehearsal. My seat mate happened to glance at the title of my choreography, and became nervous. "A MILLION FOOLS ON FIRE, What is that all about?!" As it turns out, he was a fireman, and now, a concerned citizen. I assuaged his fears, but his question sparked an hour-long conversation in which I did my best to define and discuss contemporary dance. YES: THIS IS TEACHING. |
Jennifer Kayle feels privileged to teach and perform compositional improvisation both nationally and internationally, from a professional laboratory in St. Petersburg, Russia (Building the Dance), to the prestigious Bates Dance Festival/Young Dancers Workshop (2009), to "Performatica in Cholula, Mexico, and Casa de Cultura in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic. Together with The Architects, Jennifer Kayle is founding member and co-director of MICI: Movement Intensive in Compositional Improvisation, an annual week-long intensive for professionals and advanced students. Other favorite teaching experiences include two years (2015-2017) of teaching and co-directing the Graduate Institute for Public Engagement in the Academy, created by the Obermann Center for Advanced Studies at the University of Iowa. It is in the broadest sense that Jennifer sees her mission as an artist-teacher: thoughtfully engaging "the public," teaching students with an eye toward their potential public roles, helping students develop and use their talents to the fullest degree as artists, and more broadly, as knowledgeable people who are consciously and creatively engaged in their lives, their culture, and their communities.
